Do anarchists support voluntary membership?

On 13 April there was a very interesting programme about anarchy on Chris Laidlaw's 'Ideas' programme on National Radio. In an interview, Wellington anarchist Sam Buchanan described the principles behind anarchy,

"It starts from fairly simple principles….We have no right to be ruled unless we give consent to authority....Everything must be done by voluntary agreement…Let's work by voluntary agreement to finding out how can we make a society run without coercion, without authority, without violence."

So if everything must be done by voluntary agreement, would anarchists support voluntary membership of all incorporated societies?

You're a sad man if you think you are ruled by a student association.

You'll note I didn't say anyone was ruled by student associations.

The question was, "if everything must be done by voluntary agreement, would anarchists support voluntary membership of all incorporated societies?"

As someone above said, since associations don't rule you, anarchism has nothing to do with the voluntary or universal nature of students association membership.

Largely anarchists seem to believe in a collective good and universal membership as long as you can ideologically opt-out - as indeed you can with students associations.

Some anarchists have said trade unions (different to students association but close enough for this example) should be voluntary - not for ideological reasons, but so they could drop more moderate members and focus on the more radical agendas of volunteer members.

If you're actually interested about anarchist's view on such membership - just drop Sam an e-mail...

PS - Mike, drop the line "Student Choice promotes freedom of association through voluntary membership of student associations".
Any twat knows that whether associations are compulsory or voluntary - you're still free to associate with whom you choose
